Mount Pinatubo Private Tours

Two of the days on this mountain run as a private group. The vehicle carries your party, the pick-up point is one you choose, and the departure time is agreed with you. Here is what that buys, what it does not, and who is better off on a shared van.

What a private Mount Pinatubo tour actually is

A vehicle, a driver and your own party. Nobody else is collected, nobody else sets the departure time, and you are not standing on a petrol-station forecourt at eleven at night waiting for a van to fill. Two of the listings here state it in their own activity facts: private group.

The mountain at the other end is the same mountain. What you are buying is the day around it. On a trip that starts in the middle of the night and runs for twelve to fourteen hours, that is a large part of the experience.

Why choose a private tour

Collection is from an address you choose

The private crater hike lists eleven pick-up points — Makati, Pasay, Quezon City, Fort Bonifacio, both NAIA terminals, Pampanga, Clark, Subic and Cavite — and the hot-spring day collects at your Metro Manila address. A shared day meets at one Makati forecourt and nowhere else.

The start time is arranged, not published

A shared crater day leaves at midnight because that is what the shared van needs. A private booking is timed around your morning, which on the crater hike means a departure nearer three.

Clark changes the arithmetic

Clark International Airport is about an hour from the jump-off against three from Makati. Only a private booking will collect you there, and that is six hours of driving removed from a fourteen-hour day.

The guiding ratio is stated

One licensed guide to every five travellers on the private crater hike, with a 4x4 that seats five. Shared departures do not publish a ratio at all.

Every fee is settled before you arrive

The private crater hike itemises the environmental, entrance and conservation fees inside the fare and adds bottled water and a coordinator reachable through the day.

Three things true of a private day and false of a shared one

Private tours vs the shared crater day

The shared crater day costs a third of the private one, carries the mountain fees inside its fare, and publishes its timetable to the quarter hour. What it does not give you is any control over where or when it starts. Here is the comparison in full.

What you get, and what you don't

You get: a vehicle to yourselves, a pick-up point of your choosing, a departure time set around you, and on the crater hike a stated guide ratio and every mountain fee prepaid.

You do not get: a discount as the party grows. Every fare here is quoted per person, so a private booking for four costs four times the listed price rather than a vehicle split four ways.

You also do not get: a meal, on either of them. Meals are excluded on the crater hike and the hot-spring fare excludes the resort's entry ticket unless you add that option at booking.

And on the hot-spring day you do not get the caldera. It runs the same volcanic country on the Pampanga side and finishes in thermal pools. The crater lake is reached from the other trail entirely.

Planning a private Mount Pinatubo tour

Price band: $141 for the hot-spring day, $383 for the crater hike, both per person.
Duration: eight hours and fourteen hours respectively, door to door.
Booking window: at least fifteen days ahead on the crater hike if you are travelling on a foreign passport; a week is comfortable otherwise.
Season: December to May for the crater; the hot-spring day is the more reliable booking in the wet months.
Where to start from: Clark or Angeles if you can, which removes the worst of the driving. Getting to the jump-off has the road times.

Confirm the pick-up point the day before. On a private booking the operator contacts you after the reservation to agree the exact address and time. Reply to it. A private day that cannot find you at three in the morning is the same problem as a shared one.

Who should choose something else

Most people, honestly. If you are staying in Makati and a midnight meet on Makati Avenue is no obstacle, a private booking is several times the price for convenience you do not need. The shared crater day is the better buy by a wide margin. It is also the most reviewed listing on this mountain, and the only one that publishes a timetable.

If you are booking late, the private crater hike asks travellers on a foreign passport for at least fifteen days' notice, so it is not the answer for next weekend. If you are travelling with a child under ten it is not the answer either, because that listing sets a minimum age. And if what you want is simply the cheapest way to stand on the rim, take a Mount Pinatubo tour package and spend the difference on the rest of the trip. Every departure, private and shared, is listed on Mount Pinatubo Tours.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a Mount Pinatubo tour private?

The vehicle carries your party and nobody else, the pick-up point is one you choose rather than a fixed forecourt, and the departure time is agreed with the operator instead of published. Two of the listings here state private group in their own activity facts.

How much more does a private day cost?

The private crater hike is $383 per person against $101 for a shared seat, and the private hot-spring day is $141. All of them are per-person prices, so a party of four pays four times the figure.

Does a private tour go anywhere different?

The crater hike reaches the same lake by the western approach through Zambales; the hot-spring day goes to Puning on the Pampanga side and does not reach the caldera at all. The mountain is the same mountain.

Can a private tour collect me from Clark or Subic?

Yes. The private crater hike lists eleven pick-up points including Clark International Airport, Subic, Cavite and both NAIA terminals, which is the single strongest reason to pay for one.

How far ahead do I need to book?

At least fifteen days for the crater hike if you are travelling on a foreign passport, on the operator's own booking note. A week is comfortable for the hot-spring day.

Is a private tour better if I cannot walk far?

The hot-spring day is, and it is private. It involves no trekking, collects from your address and runs eight hours rather than fourteen. The private crater hike still asks for one to two hours on foot each way.

Do private tours include the mountain fees?

The crater hike itemises the environmental, entrance and conservation fees inside the fare and adds bottled water. The hot-spring day does not include the resort's entry ticket unless you select that option at booking.

Can I add a stop to a private day?

Ask the operator on the morning rather than at booking, because the answer depends on the road and the water that day. A private vehicle is the only arrangement here where the question is worth asking at all.
