Well run from the first minute to the last, with a good driver and good guides. The country up there is worth the long haul out of Manila, and it takes a lot to make me say that about a drive.

A carefully organised day with plenty of detail along the way. The views are outstanding and the walk up to the crater is not hard — about five kilometres. The 4X4 stretch is beautiful in its own right, and the stop at the village added a great deal to it.

Treat this as an adventure rather than a hike. It is an easy three kilometres each way, with an optional 250 metres down to the lake and back up again. Bring a light jacket for the 4x4 ride and take breakfast with you, though snacks can be bought along the way.

The views are the reason to come and they deliver. The jeep ride is long and rough and the walk is five kilometres over rocks and through streams, so be ready for that. There is a guide, but do not expect a running commentary on the history.

We lost the best part of an hour at the meeting point to a delayed flight and a taxi that could not find it, and the day still worked. The 4WD run to the trailhead and the walk in to the crater lake were worth the trouble. The pace at the end was brisk, so there was no time to buy anything.

Our guide let us head back once we had taken it all in rather than holding to a fixed clock. That got us to the hotel at a sensible hour instead of late at night.

The scenery does not let up, and even the drive out of Manila has mountains and lakes to look at. JayZ and Vince explained the customs and the culture of the area as we went. I travelled on my own and never had a moment's concern, and as walks go this is one of the easier ones.

Arriving early meant we had the place to ourselves. The ride up the riverbed is exhilarating and then you soak it all off in a beautiful setting; the hot sand and the mud coating are the part that stays with you. Lunch afterwards was a very good Filipino spread.

It is roughly a two-hour drive from Manila, so take the earliest slot you can get. Do that and the whole place is yours.

What you are booking here is the transport, and the transport was very good. I had not budgeted for paying at the gate, and the driver lent me the cash so that I could do the activity.

The place itself is excellent and I would go again. What is worth understanding before you book is that this fare is a car and a driver for half a day, and everything once you arrive is arranged and charged at the resort.
